What are the classes like?

The method consists of two modalities:

ATM® (Awareness Through Movement): We work in a group. The learner can explore his perceptions, feelings and thoughts through the tasks proposed by the practioner to reach a better and clearer organization of movement.

FI® (Functional Integration): FI® lessons are individual. Through gentle touches in the body the practitioner helps the learner discover a full range of often restricted movements.

Moshé Feldenkrais

moshe.JPG (16218 bytes)

Moshe Fendelkrais was born in Russia in 1904. He emigrated to Palestine at the age of 14. He graduated as a physisist and engineer and worked with the Curie family . Later, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics as he got his PhD in the University of Sorbone.

He won the first black belt Yudo category in the Western world and founded the first Yudo Centre.

He set out to research anatomy, neurophysiology, psychology and the evolution of man through an injury in his knee which made walking difficult and to which traditional medicine gave him no answer. Through movement he discovered a direct link between the body and the nervous system which improved the whole functioning of the body.

Therefore, he created a new teaching method, the Fendelkrais Method®, which aims at a deep understanding of body movement and its relation to gravity, to the self-regulating processes of the nervous system and to the integration of the being as sensuous, emotional and intellectual organism in his relation to his environment

He never stopped studying until his death in 1984. The backbone of his work was focused on developing the ability to learn or, in his words, "learning to learn".

He wrote:

"Body and mature behaviour. A study of anxiety, sex, gravitation and learning" 1949

"Awareness through movement" 1972

"The case of Nora. Body awareness as healing therapy" 1977

"The potent self. The dynamics of the body and the mind" 1985

"The elusive obvious" 1981

"The Feldenkrais article collection"
